Southern Hemi Influence July 8, 2009

This morning started out with a tried and true monster combo, spinach, chia seeds, banana, and papaya.

For lunch I had yet another salad mess with asparagus, zucchini, red pepper, carrot, beet, avocado, and the rest of my nectarine, balsamic, and tarragon dressing.

Which was followed by a cinnamon raisin ezekiel sandwich stuffed with an awesome PB2, dried apricot, cinnamon and maple flake filling.

And in the afternoon I snacked on the rest of my mulberries.

Then for dinner I was craving something weird (for the season), orange. So I stopped by the grocery store and picked up a clementine which probably came from WAY south of the equator and used it to top a beet green salad which was dressed with sesame oil and orange juice concentrate. And along that I had a tower pile of steamed broccoli and a tiny beet topped with raw mole. And the whole plate got a sprinkling of sesame seeds to make it look a bit prettier.

Pride and Grass June 28, 2009

This morning started off with a refreshing green monster featuring kale, chia seeds, banana, and pineapple.

Later in the morning I headed out to restock my kale supply, and weather wasn’t looking particularly nice for a parade.

But  by the time I got home and had some lunch, kabocha piled with zucchini noodles and mole (the last of the non-frozen mole, and a new plate!), it had cleared up.

Though it was still quite cool out, and people were generally more clothed than usual for the Pride Parade.  This float being an exception.

I wasn’t particularly feeling like standing outside in the dampness for hours on end, so I watched from my partment window.  Which allowed me to nibble on snacks such as a bowlful of fresh strawberries and papaya, and a couple of dried bananas.

After the parade, I had a little wheat grass juicing adventure!  I picked up this bag at the grocery store for $4.50.

The internet told me to blend up the grass with some water in my Vitamix, then strain the pulp out with a mesh bag old white cotton T-shirt.  What the internet left out was to not put the whole half pound of grass in at once, and to cut up the grass a bit first to avoid the blades stalling.  But after I split the grass into three scissor chopped batches, and waited a few minutes for the blender to restart, all was well.  I added quite a bit of water, so I ended up with two ice cube trays, plus 12 muffin cups worth of juice in the freezer, as well as a glass left over to try out fresh.  I am glad I didn’t try to eat this massive amount of fiber, it looks a bit intimidating…never mind the wonky colouring of the picture.  I swear my hand isn’t THAT pink.

My glass of wheat grass juice.  I really liked it!  I was surprised by how sweet it is, it tastes like it has stevia mixed in or something.  After the picture I added a couple ice cubes and a squeeze of lime, and the drink was perfect!  And yes, my tarragon is getting a bit out of hand, I need to find something good to use it in.

When dinner time rolled around I wasn’t very hungry, so I snacked on the last of the Kashi crackers, and finished off my jar of sunflower seed butter, probably about 2.5 servings of each.

Now I need a shower, even after doing dishes my hands still smell like grass!  Anyone else excited to get a day off in the middle of the week?

 

Golf Tourney! June 26, 2009

So I was a bad food blogger today. I took a picture of breakfast but right now I’m tired and don’t feel like getting up to get my camera. It was just a green monster anyways with kale, chia seeds, banana, papaya, and pineapple. I had one earlier this week, go look at that post if you’re really curious.

Today was a golf tournament at work! And it was so much fun! I had never even seen a golf club in real life before today (excluding mini-putt), and I must say I wasn’t as horrible as I was anticipating. I happened to be in a team with my cubicle mate (also a golf newbie) and one of the best golfers in the company, and since we were playing in the way where you each move up to the previous best shot, we won! I actually putted our only birdie! Though I won’t mention the number of times I missed a birdie shot for a par (though the other two did the same thing :))

So anyways, lunch was a big juicy BBQ beef burger topped with ketchup, mustard, relish, pickle, and tomato. Then dinner was a big plateful of salad (mostly spring mix with some radishes and tomato), steamed carrots and green beans, a giant, delicious piece of grilled salmon, and a whole wheat dinner roll. I was pleasantly surprised with the healthful-ness of the dinner offerings. Though I did avoid the big pasta salad, enormous baked potatoes, and huge slabs of steak. Seriously, my salmon had to have been at least 6 ounces, but the steak was probably in the 10 oz range. Plus I had a small square of carrot cake for dessert.

Now I’m in desperate need of a shower and bed. After all I have places to be and people to meet tomorrow morning, and I’ll be sharing the fun, promise!

 

Frans-tastic Day June 23, 2009

Breakfast this morning was once again RFRW inspired for the fruit choices.  My monster included dino kale, chia seeds, banana, papaya, and pineapple, tasty indeed and THICK because all the fruit was frozen.

Lunch time saw a giant, delicious salad of spring mix, asparagus, carrot, red pepper, cucumber, green onion and mole for dressing. Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s got nothing on me (I didn’t even notice the face until up loading the pics, I even took the picture on its side).

And afternoon snacking featured a wonderful Crunchy Peanut Butter Clif bar.

Then for dinner my parents came to the city to see a show (Soiree Quebec, but couldn’t take me because it was sold out too quickly ;.;), so we went out for a quick dinner before hand at Fran’s, again.  For someone who rarely eats out I’ve practically become a regular there this week.  This time I got the Warm Chicken Salad with an enormous, but pathetic pile of lettuce topped with carrot, cabbage, sad tomato slices, cucumber, and a tasty mound of grilled chicken, onion and bell peppers with teriyaki sauce on the side.  The raw veggies were disappointing, I left most behind, but the cooked were great.

No picture of dinner, but check out the garden gifts they brought me!  A big bag of lettuce, asparagus, and a ton of various herbs.

Epic Fail May 8, 2009

Before getting to today’s slightly scarring experience, let’s back track to last night’s bed-time snack.  I tried my pumpkin chips (that I bought a feww weeks ago along with mushroom chips).  They were okay.  They get points for being non-greasy, but didn’t they have much, if any pumpkin flavour and they were a but dry, like over baked squash.  Not buying these again…but I must go back for the mushrooms, and to try the apple chips….

This morning I had my appetite slightly ruined by part one of the day’s failure, which I cover later, so I ended up being hungry, but with only 10 minutes before I had to be out the door.  So I quickly grabbed whatever, and ended up with a bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch (more hiding under the yogurt), yogurt, banana, and the last of my PB2 ;_;.  At least this breakfast managed to take a bad taste out of my mouth, and by the end I was enjoying it (quickly!)

For lunch I continued with my veggie and fruit spree.  There was a container of snow peas, carrots, cucumber, celery, and red pepper with left over pumpkin soup for dipping.

For dinner I tossed romaine in my new favourite yogurt/whole grain dijon/chive dressing and topped it with a steaming pile of broccoli.

Now what was my scarring experience that started in the morning and ended with some kitchen experiments tonight?

Last weekend I bought a papaya. It was completely green, but so were the other ones in the pile at the (chinese) grocery store. I figured it would ripen on the counter. By this morning, the papaya was still green, but it was a bit softer than on Sunday, so I figured it must be ripe, but just be a different variety than usual, like how mangos come in different colours. So I sliced it open and found this.

I was suspicious.  Mostly because I was at least expecting the seeds to look the same. So before cutting it up and adding it to my lunch, I licked it (what? I’m the only one who’s going to eat it anyway). It was HORRIFYING. It’s ridiculously astringent, like unripe persimmons (I’ve lost one or two to not being able to tell when those things are fully ripened). I was going to throw the whole thing out, but thought I would stick in the fridge at least for today to see if the internet offered any useful information about green papayas. I looked them up during a slow period at work and found suggestions to cook them.

I was skeptical, but I gave two methods a try tonight (I was NOT about to try it raw again, no matter how many recipes for thai green papaya salad I found). One chunk took a trip in the oven with cinnamon and honey, and another one was boiled by itself so I could try it and add things later if it tasted any better. Both methods worked to take away the astringency, but once that was gone, the papaya still had a weird taste to it that I was not enjoying. The baked version was slightly better simply because it was drowned in honey, but still not very good and I didn’t bother eating more than a bite of either dish.

At least the experience is over, and I know better for next time. And this counts as me trying a new food right? No matter how accidentally, and unsuccessfully? I must look for something (hopefully) better for Katie’s Challenge this weekend….

I did finish the night on a better note though with tasty, crunchy roasted chickpeas. I mixed one can of chickpeas with 2 T tahini and 1 T cinnamon and roasted them in the oven at 400 for about an hour. The first batched (pictured) was a bit over cooked because I stopped check them so often and waited too long, but the second batch was perfect, some crunchy, some slightly soft still on the inside, just the way I like them. And I hope the person I give them to tomorrow likes them too 🙂
